Crummy Therapy

After I made such an 'episode about my little house reunion quilt (previous 2 posts).....My mind/brain/noggin/the creative side of my head was worn and tired......so, the best kind of therapy I can do is to pull out my crumbs (Quiltville term) and do some mindless sewing.....or another term would be to make fabric. When I pull out my tiny scraps and just start sewing them together it is soooo soothing and relaxing. I can still think on other projects without having to pay too much attention to what I'm sewing. I have my stash categorized into all sizes. My crumbs being at the bottom of the spectrum.....the next size up would be chunks and then strips then strings then 1".....well, you get the picture. I started my crummy therapy/making fabric way back in August 2008.

All those different sizes have their own drawer/bin............I pull out my crumb bin....place it right next to my machine and away I go!!! Most of the time I just reach in and sew up what I have pulled out randomly.

You can sew up these tiny little scraps to any size you want. Sometimes I dig through and sew up all the same color....like the greens above.

You could sew up all reds.......oops......looks like a strip got in there with my crumbs.....that's ok to throw some of those in too.

Maybe you would like the black and whites......

Or maybe you save those little teeny tiny half square triangles 'cause they were just so cute you couldn't throw them away!!

But I think mixing them up all scrappy is a VERY good thing too!
AAaahhhhhh.....I feel sooooo much better after a little crummy therapy......you should try it.....you will feel better too.........and just think about the fun things you can make with that wonderful fabric you made and some of that scrap stash you put to good use.
I'll have a future post on what projects I used my crumbs for......now GO.....isn't it time for your therapy session??

  1. Your crumbs are so happy and beautiful. You will find the perfect inspiration to finish the class reunion quilt - you are smart to give your brain a rest. I've never done crumbs, but I need to try sometime.

  2. It sure is, but I have to finish cleaning and doing the laundry first!!! Yours look awesome and it makes me eager to get in there and sew.

  4. My therapy sewing it my red/cream Mock Pineapple from Bonnie H. I have the strips all cut in a try and it just push them through, one after another, Mindless production work. After I'm bored with that, I'll get to work on something that requires thinking. Love your crumbs, I throw those pieces away....I know, you are gasping as you read that!

  5. I don't know what it is about that crumb fabric, but it is so nice to look at! I am using my biggest crumbs to make my hexies for One Flower Wednesday (I guess you would call these "chunks"). The scraps from these are going into a container and will be crumb fabric one day!

  7. Love love doing that only my crumbs are not so organized. I put everything in one pile and it is a high pile at this point and do exactly what you do, pull it out and sew. You are so right, relaxing and soothing.

  8. Very crummy LOL I give all my scraps to a friend - so I have no crummy therapy. But it does feel good to plop those scraps in her bag and watch it fill up - and know that it is going to be out of my house very soon.

  9. Just the kind of therapy I'm needing about now.. maybe I'll sew some up while American Idol is on..
Can't wait to see what you make with your crumby fabric.

  10. I am totally crumb-crazy too!! I've been sewing a few together today as my "leaders and enders" (thanks Bonnie!) while I make my liberated doggie blocks.

The only bits I throw away are tiny snippets that only birds can use on their nests (and they do use them!!).

My husband finds this exercise in my fabric therapy to be weird. First I buy fabric, then cut it up, then sew it together to make my own fabric. But I love it and I love watching what you do with yours!

  13. I think that crummy/scrappy is the best! I always love how something so random can turn out to be something so beautiful.

    Thanks for sharing.

HUGS to you and Goober :0)

  14. You've got my kind of thinking!!! I thought me and maybe my OCC friend were the only ones who thought like this? Not so, it is wonderful mindless sewing.I am a professional quilter, so I don't get much sewing time...but every now and then I just need to sew, so crumbs is what I do.There is not the feeling of having over committed to a 'Quilt'.... just sewing.
By the way OCC stands for 'Obsessive Compulsive Crumber' .
I have photo of my Crumbs quilt on my blog...but my Crumb bag is still overflowing!!
I look forward to seeing your Crumbs.

  16. Great idea, who does not need some therapy now and then and the best thing is , it uses up all those scrabs! I definitively have to organize them a bit like you suggested...now it is just one bin and a big mess!!

  20. I enjoyed this post!! I am the other half of the OCC pair Leeanne has talked bout in her comment above; and I agree totally; as well as being relaxing and great therapy, there is a real sense of satisfaction from the thought of making something (a whole quilt!!) from nothing!!

  22. I love crumbs! A long while ago I made some crumb blocks. Now you've got me inspired to get them out and do something with them.

  23. That is the best therapy you have. I love sewing my scraps together, but I sew them on muslin, thinking I needed a back for support. I like your idea. Can't wait to see it....

  31. I just can't commit to crummy therapy, sorry Belinda! Those little pieces of fabric just wear me out. But I'm glad they soothe you instead of winding you up!

  32. Love the crumbs, great idea!
Sending good vibes for the reunion quilt :o)

  33. Love your little crumbs. Oh I need a little of this kind of therapy too.

  34. That's very interesting and I'm not really surprised by this, 'cause this is my therapie, too :) I do the same thing almost every time I need a rest from my children and the bucket of crumbs is full.
And this kind of sewing makes me happy.
Seize the day and the night and the crumbs - happy sewing :)
And lots of greetings from bavaria.

  35. You have really cute crumbs! It is wonderful therapy...hope it did the trick for you. I can't wait to see what you've done with the crumbs.

I'm still trimming my crumb blocks I did when I couldn't do any other kind of sewing. I have about 60 6 inch blocks, so I could use some inspiration!

  36. YES! It IS time for me to have a crumb therapy session!

  37. Well I never did hear of "crumbs" put this way. "aka: making fabric" and that just makes it sound all the more fun. Plus, now I "get it."

Sometimes I'm a little slow. I don't see the fun or I don't get the joke. I know. Other times I can quick, right on and very witty. I wonder my moments balance out? Hmm... Let's not go there!

  38. Wow, how cool is that. A surprise quilt when finished. Neat!

  39. Great plan! I like the look of your fabric crumb piecing. I'm looking forward to seeing more.
