SOLIDS

I've never really considered the value of solids. Usually when I shop in the fabric store or online I'm drawn to the prints. Prints of all kinds...plaids, florals, etc.. I've always loved fabrics, lots and lots of fabrics. Even in my home....I have always loved long window treatments with yards and yards of fabric. But you know, I've NEVER EVER had or used ANY solid colors. It was not even considered on my part. But...you know....things can change, right? I'm thinking about some right now!! I was thinking about this today and I thought...I'll go and see how many solids I have. The ones above were really only bought to use in borders. As you can see, I don't have very many. I don't know why this came to me today, but I intend to be more aware of the solids in the future. As I continue to try and finish hand quilting the baby quilt that seems to NEVER get finished, I'm considering other projects in my mind. I think some solids are in the near future....after all, there IS the ROUND Thang to finish!!

Above is a bird DH cut out and I painted years and years ago for my grandmother. I was so glad to see that she had kept it all these years.....so, I inherited it back. My grandmother was a BIG bird watcher as well. I guess I have come by it through her!!

  2. Wow - that bird is great - and how fortunate that it flew back to you. I love bird watching too - I have been listing the birds that have visited our new yard since we moved in last January - wow, almost a year already.

  3. solids are a nice place to rest your eyes and they allow the quilting to really show up. In recent years I've turned to things like moda marbles - almost solid but not quite. But now I'm returning to solid solid. You have more solids than I'd have guessed!

  4. Hia Belinda, sorry I fell off the planet- illness. Just caught up with you finally.

Love the little houses. I backed and had a go at machine quilting for the 4 season ones I made. it had to be with my spare machine as I've totally killed the one I normally use (with a repair man at mo). Ditto laptop. That's my run of 3 done so hopefully nothing else will break for a while.

Yes I am late to appreciate solids too. I made daughter a quilt (my 1st) from red and white squares and not a plain one in sight. As you can imagine the sight is a little overwhelming to say the least so she has it with the backing showing - strawberries needless to say. :-) Ah well I'm still learning. You definately have more solids than me. :-)

  5. Oh my goodness.. you have some beautiful pieces there. Solids are a huge favorite of mine. They can totally "make" a quilt. And amish quilts are made of all solids.. absolutely beautiful.

Precious bird. I guess you do have bluebirds then. ;-)

  6. I've never been one for florals. When I first started quilting I got loads, but have since given them all away and am concentrating more on batiks, moda marble type fabrics and similar. I love solids.

  7. It's funny that you said that about solids.. I've always seemed to have a need for them and when I'd find them on sale I'd buy every color I could get my hands on. I actually panic when my supply gets low.

  8. Beautiful bird from your talented husband. How special for you to have it back. Love your thoughts on solids. I've notice many quilters incorporating them in their projects. I want the entire Amy Butler line of solids. I can dream can't I?

  9. I have always loved my prints but Gwen has turned me on to solids. I really like your combination of colors. It is different working with solids but more artistic. It can be difficult to find variations of color.

  10. I think I have a fear of solids. There are almost none in my stash. Lots of marble textures, but no true solids. I need to look at their potential more carefully I think.

  13. i've always considered solids very old fashioned in quilts. but i just recently bought 6 yds. of white Kona cotton. & plan to buy more colors. once everyone realizes that they do not cost as much as the beautiful designed fabrics. i think that you will see more solids in quilts.

  14. That's a lot of solids in my book - I probably have one in my stash - a red. I have some mottled fabrics but not any true solids.

I want to get GWen's Marston's new book but I know it will lead to buying more fabric.

  15. Your thoughts on solids are interesting. I've always preferred printed fabrics too, and I still do. At one point, I gave all my solid fabrics away to my daughter (except for black!). Now I'm collecting them again. I've got a few more than you, but not many. I have trouble working with solids, I guess. No disguising boo-boos with them! I still prefer the Moda marbles or hand-dyes to solid solids, so to speak!

  17. sometimes we forget the importance of solids and they are often hard to find at fabric shops. I also like to use mini-prints that read as solids but they are hard to find, too

  18. I just think the little bird hook is adorable. It's so nice that it has come back to you.

You have a lot of solids. I have a few myself but not enough of any one thing to be able to do anything with. I usually just use them for accent.
I'm interested in seeing that lovely baby quilt all done.:c)

    Keep on stitching...~~Fran...:c)

  19. Great bird. Your painting skills are wonderful......Solids....hummmmm! I don't know why we quilters hardly ever think to buy solids. I only buy them when I'm doing borders or log cabins for the center. But you've given me something to think about for sure. Take care.

  20. I am with you on the solids. I have only black and white in my stash. However, looking at your picture I thought that what you have would make a very beautiful, fun quilt. Gives me something to think about on my next shopping trip and thanks for giving me an excuse to go buy more fabric. lol

  22. I'm thinking about a solid border for my next quilt. I want the eye to be drawn to the blocks and not distracted in any way.
