Playing With 'Miss Bernie".......

Hey, how did those people in Switzerland who make these things know I had cows..????? Isn't this a HOOT!

I'm learning and checking out all her 'bells and whistles' today. Look at some of these wonderful stitches she allowed me to make!!

Oh my...look at these sweet little snowflakes. I'm thrilled they are a nice size and not tee-ni-nee!

This swirl or ocean wave stitch looks like real 'hand stitchery' to me....this one stitches out slow!

I used my BSR--Bernina Stitch Regulator here for some quilty practice runs.....Miss Bernie is not playing nice with me....the stitching is 'crap-o-la'!!!......Uh, well....maybe it's me???

My seem ripper slides easily underneath the large spaces on these seams...the seams are longer than when I use a basting stitch!! (Click to enlarge)....I thought this stitch regulator would make my stitches look better. I have practiced some just lowering my feed dogs and free motion....that worked better than this. I know.....it's probable ME!
Can you see what I'm talking about.....maybe I should get out my handbook....when all else fails.....read the instructions! I think maybe I need to adjust my stitch length.......I'll go try that and see what happens! .......MUST.LEARN.THIS.
......And Jenny (no blog) I'm waiting for that email picture of your scrappy log cabin...can't wait to see it!!

  1. Now you have me paranoid, What if this is the post for a give away!!
I hope your manual and experimenting is helping you figure it out. I've never done the free motion stuff! This looks like fun stuff.

  4. I think it looks like the tension needs adjusting as well as the stitch length. I have to do that on my 820. I wish we could download our own screens, we would put quilts on! Looks like your having some fun with it, I hope you have good back up service.

What will they come up with next?

  10. Yeah!!!! Playtime with BERNIE!! YES!! Keep playing! The first several weeks of my playing with free motion stitching left a lot to be desired. Keep playing and one day you will hit your spot with the speed of the stitches and moving the fabric and off you will fly!! ;) It gets to be fun and relaxing.not work. Gail

  13. I tried out the stitch regulator on the Bernina at a class (I was planning on upgrading my 1230) and I couldn't stand it, my quilting teacher said she hardly ever uses it (the BSR) drove her crazy too. In fact that seemed to be the consensus of everyone who had it... So if I were you I would turn it off and just practice without it...it really is easy once you get the hang of it! I love all the great embroidery stitches...which one do you have? I'm still trying to decide which one I want now that I know I don't care about the BSR. Bernina's are sooo awesome :) Have fun playing!!!

  15. Ohhh...I am so jealous! I have a the QE 440 on my wish list. Is this the one that you got?

Hey your stitches look good for a first timer! Better than what mine would look like.

    Keep practicing!

    XOXO,
    Ole Miss

  16. I know they say it takes practice, practice, practice... but I don't think I will ever see a cow on my sewing machine. You win. Very very funny.

  17. Love those embroidery stitches - especially the font. I love my Bernina 160 but now I'm having second thoughts about getting the stitch regulator. I'll be interested to see if you get it working the way you want.

  18. I'm practising too. Got a new walking foot for my Singer which is about the same era as yours. Stitches all wobbly and trying to feed the fabric through at a constant, regular speed is doing my head in.

Practice practice practice. Perhaps we can compare notes and then think of all those quilts we are going to get done!

  20. I have the Bernina 440 and I use the BSR alot. Does the red light come on when you move your fabric? If not, you need to read the instructions because you haven't pushed all the buttons necessary. I change my stitch length to 3 so I don't get tiny stitches; tension much lower (depends on your machine but I use 1); presser foot pressure down to 1; and I use BSR option 1 (not 2). See if that helps. Good luck!
