Got Pattern.....????

How do you come up with your quilty projects??? Do you ALWAYS use a pattern or do you just DRAW one up??? This little sketch is one I drew out last year. I would like to do this for my oldest granddaughter one day. I have 'tons' of notebooks of all shapes and sizes full of drawings and sketches of ideas. No matter if you are a 'great' artist or draw like a first grader I think it is a good idea to keep notepad and pencil handy to write down or draw out those ideas so you don't forget them!!

I was thinking about doing a table runner one day and doodled out this idea. This little drawing is only about 3 inches long.

I think this teapot drawing I drew from one of Tonya's at Lazy Gal Quilting tutorials, drawing out separate units to be sewn. I divide the pattern into sections. This helps me figure out how it might get put together.
This is my most recent I-dee for a baby quilt gift. I know these people so-so and I'm not sure I should spend that much time and effort on a gift for a couple that is around 33 yrs. old and has been away from our community for at least 15 yrs.....but, living in a small town....EVERYONE gets an invitation to the shower. I guess I could just do another little 'token' gift and make this anyway and save it for someone special in my own family.....'cause you know me...I will probable want to HAND quilt it!!!
This was my very first rough draft of the mini teapot quilt I showed on my previous post. I just couldn't get the 'tea time' letters to fit in right!!
I joined the Hexagon 2 blog here a while back. I 've been struggling with what fabric styles I would like to use. I think I have narrowed it down to the blues and yellows....maybe. My little hexagon papers are freezer paper and I punched holes in the middle to make it easier to remove them. I think I got the hole punching idea from Mel over at My Own Place blog. Mel always has such great ideas doesn't she!!

I hope you enjoyed seeing some of my ways and processes on how I start some of my quilty projects....SO... go get a pencil, pen, marker or CRAYON and DRAW something....I promise....
you will like it!!! Then be sure and post and show us what you came up with!!!

  1. My ideas look like a kindergartener got ahold of a pencil but I know what I mean. :o) LOVE your stack of blues and yellows.

  2. I use graph paper and colored pencils. I have lots of little doodles laying around. I rarely use a pattern because I make 1/2" seams on my quilts so I would have to modify a pattern anyway. The exception to that is applique patterns. I sometimes buy those because other people are better "drawers" than me. LOL!

  3. I use graph paper also (it has 1/4" squares, I think). I don't consider myself a quilt designer, but when I think about it, I guess I have designed some! Hee Hee! I really do like your tea time quilt. I should make something like it for my BIL/SIL with the "tea time" words on it, because they have their own "tea time" every day! I'll have to think about that.

  4. Hi Belinda, I do the same thing as far as drawing on paper. They are all over the place. Your teapot you made Stehpanie is so cute. Need to get your patterns published.

  6. Neat post! I found a small notebook, made in Europe, that has graph paper instead of lined paper and I carry that in my purse. Makes it easier to sketch out an idea when I'm away from home.

  7. I have once or twice drawn out a design. You know keeping a little notebook of ideas is a great suggestion. I usually look at what other people are doing and go from there. I try to see it in my head. I do have a notebook that I write ideas in but I don't often draw them. Thanks for sharing. It is fun to hear how other people work.

  8. Hi Belinda-
You hit the nail right on the head for me as far as keeping paper and pencil around for sketching.
I ALWAYS have a notebook with a mechanical pencil(with a good eraser) with me at all times.
When the notebook is full, I buy another. I keep all of them in a big file drawer in my studio.
I have doodled ever since I can remember and I would get into trouble from teachers for drawing all over my assignments!
Keep all of your drawings together for future ref-it looks like you have some great i dees going there- they are masterpieces!!!

  9. This is a great idea - and you definitely don't need to be an artist. Even if you can't draw you can write the words of what you want. I know I've lost a few great (mmm.. how big was that fish?) (or maybe not so great but we'll never know, will we?) because I didn't make any notes or sketches. Thanks for sharing your processes Belinda!

  12. Great way to keep ideas in notebook. I do that sometimes, but with my drawing skill at it is I mainly write the ideas down instead.

  14. My ideas always seem to come to me in the middle of the night so I have a pad and pen in my nightstand for such occasions. I can't draw worth beans but it gets the job done.

  19. I always have lots of creativity floating around in my head, but once I pick up a pencil and paper, I go blank. I just don't even understand how to start drawing out what I can see so clearly in my mind.

  20. I think that is a terrific way to get your thoughts and ideas down. I love some of the drawings and think they will make wonderful quilts someday. It is nice to see that you are also a member of the GHQA2 blog. I am enjoying making my hexagons, great busy work. I love the colors that you chose.

  21. Hia Belinda, I had a book with a Jellybean cover at the mo where ideas get drawn and described in the back and my To Do List and a bit of a diary got in the front. Eventually the 2 meet and I get a new book. :-) I can't share yet as the parcel hasn't arrived with it's new owner, but I have a similar mini sketch outline for her bag in my book and then it's down to seeing the fabrics together on the table before cutting and letting the idea evolve a little dependant on the fabric quantity I have.

It was great to see your ideas and thought process.
